From this point 225 years ago, a person could see four or five Mandan earthlodge villages, homes to 6,000 or 7,000 people. The site has a self-guided tour, where visitors can see the depressions of a number of earth loges and a fortification ditch.

The first "Thunderbird," a public art creation by the students of United Tribes Technical College is part of the Missouri Valley Legacy Center in Keelboat Park. You'll find the second in the series of eagle sculptures and interpretation just south of that, along River Road, in Bismarck's Sertoma Park, near the entrance of Dakota Zoo. This impressive display of four different eagles on a ceramic circle is something you don't want to miss on your visit to Bismarck-Mandan. The third sculpture, "Reflections," faces the Missouri River along River Road at Steamboat Park. The reflective sphere surrounded by an eagle represents Mother Earth and reflects the area's natural beauty. The fourth sculpture, “Rising Eagle,” is located in Pioneer Park and offers visitors a bench, within the sculpture, to rest and reflect. The fifth sculpture, “The Keeper,” is located near shelter number nine in Sertoma Park.

Experience the Missouri River and its river valley as did the earliest of people living along its banks at Cross Ranch State Park.  The park is located along seven miles of the last free-flowing, undeveloped stretches of the river and is rich in both cultural and natural history.

North Dakota's Centennial State Park is purposely left primitive to preserve the land's natural beauty.  The River Peoples Visitor Center has displays and information about the once mighty Missouri River, which is now tamed through a series of major dams and reservoirs along its impressive length.  A boat ramp and electrical camping sites can be found at the Sanger Campground.  The park's main campground offers RV sites without electrical hookups, spectacular log cabins, yurts and a primitive tent area.

Cross Ranch State Park offers visitors adventure year round.  It has an extensive trail system for hikers where they can glimpse the creatures which inhabit the thickly forested river bottom.  The park is a winter playground for those who like to play in the snow.  Equipment rentals include canoes, kayaks, snowshoes and cross country skis.

35 Primitive RV sites, 15 electrical, 15 tent sites, group camping sites.  Campsite, yurt and cabin reservations can be made online at www.parkrec.nd.gov or by calling 800-807-4723.

Join the Discovery! The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, located 38 miles north of Bismarck on US Hwy 83, tells the story of the Corps of Discovery’s expedition across the continent. Overlooking the Missouri River, the Interpretive Center’s all-new galleries exhibit world-famous art collections – including Karl Bodmer and George Catlin – and Lewis & Clark-era artifacts, as well as exhibits on North Dakota agriculture. Two miles west of the Interpretive Center you can take a step back in time by visiting the reconstructed Fort Mandan, the winter home of the Lewis & Clark Expedition from 1804-05. The fully-furnished quarters bring to life what it was like for the brave men of the Expedition during that North Dakota winter over 200 years ago. The Museum Store and interpretive facilities are open daily. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students, and free to members. Plan your visit by going to www.FortMandan.com for more information.

This site in Stanton was once home to several villages of Hidatsa and Mandan, with a total population of 3,000 to 5,000 people. These villages are where Lewis & Clark obtained the services of Sakakawea and her husband, Charbonneau. Visible remains of earthlodge dwellings, cache pits, fortification ditches and travois trails are in an extraordinarily fine state of preservation. A visitor center with museum exhibits, a short film and a furnished earthlodge provide interpretation on the site, and you can enjoy 14 miles of self-guided history and nature trails. During winter months, 10 miles of trails are groomed for cross-country skiing.
